Indigo…7 days

Soft and sweet…baby Indigo.  Indigo recently came to see me with her family for her professional newborn portraits, something I have been specializing in for over 14 years.  Years of learning how to calm and pose babies, and this little ones can still surprise me!  It is so precious how their little personalities are evident, even at just a week old.  So unique, created so wonderfully unique!  Enjoy Indigo’s baby portraits…Portland Newborn Photographer

Isn’t she just precious?  She was so cozy!  The studio is always kept very warm when I am photographing a newborn.  Most babies (if fact, I’ve only ever met two brothers who didn’t like the heat) love to be extra warm when they’re naked.  So I always tell mom and dad to wear cool clothing for the session.

This little look just cracks me up!  She’s trying to figure out that lady with the big camera and lights.

Textures, textures!  I love textures…the wood floor here is a creation of mine, I love the shades of lighter and darker wood.  And the driftwood…I found that years ago on the beach, just the perfect size for a baby.  That is a very common question for me where ever I am…can I fit a baby in that?

Ryler – 10 days – Family Portrait

One of the most important photos I capture while photographing a newborn is the family portrait.  Mom and dad with their brand new little bundle of joy.  Ryler and his parents, Tyler and Rachel, made my job very easy!  This is just one of many family portraits that we captured during Ryler’s session.  I know a lot of parents think maybe they’ll pass on the family portrait, the session is all about the baby.  But I always encourage my clients to get in front of the camera for a few photographs.  It’s not a moment that you can capture even just a few months down the road.  They are this little for only so long.  A common question I get is what to wear for that all important family photo.  Simple is best!  Stick with solid, neutral colors to capture a portrait that will last a lifetime.

Newborn Props

Another question I often get during a newborn portrait session is, where do you get all of your props.  For those of you who have been to my studio, you know, I have a lot of props for babies.  Most of my props have come from years of searching.  Lots of time spent wandering the aisles of antique shops asking one question…”would a newborn fit in that?”  I also have a lot of clothing for babies…about half of these have come from my own hands (they like to stay busy).  I also purchase from vendors on sites like Etsy.  This provides my clients with a plethora of options to fit their style and wishes.

I also like to give my clients a lot of options with their images.  For example…we did a wide shot capturing the fur around and the entire antique box Mr. Ryler was sweetly resting in, but then we also moved in close to capture the sweet details, like his sweet little lips and fingers.  There will often be similar images like this during a session, close and far away, straight on and from above.  More often than not, my clients end up with both!

Newborn Portraits: Riley’s newborn session

Warning: Cuteness overload.  Riley’s newborn portraits are just so precious!  There were so many adorable images I just couldn’t narrow them down.  And little miss Riley was a unique little gal because she actually really liked all of the props we used.  Typically, during a newborn photo shoot, I have parents pick their favorite props, then put them in order.  I warn them that we will most likely not get a chance to use all the props.  We will use their favorite ones first and stop when baby says enough is enough.  But precious Riley slept so peacefully, we got them all!  So sit back and enjoy the sweet bundle that is Riley!

So when should you schedule your newborn session?  You can find that and the answers to more questions here.

Baby Photos

Check out my new birch bed!  I have been planning this bed for a long time now and I finally had enough birch branches to make it.  It is perfectly sized for a newborn portrait session, but thanks to its sturdiness, this is a photography prop that can follow your little one through their first year!  (I know it’s strong because I stood on it before I took it to the studio…all good!)

Barefoot Photography offers a number of different backgrounds and floor options so that your baby photos are unique and varied.  Not too mention shelves and shelves of baby sized props, drawers of hats and tiny pants, and blankets and wraps galore!  You are welcome to bring anything you would like to your newborn appointment, but you don’t have too!  There is plenty of all that we need on hand at the studio.

Oh my…sweet perfection!  I love these two portraits.  They will look fabulous displayed together.  Such sweet moments captured for Baby Riley with mom and dad.

See what I mean?!  How can you pick a favorite?  Riley was such a fabulous model…and she had the most direct gaze.

I love newborn portraits with tiny baby girls protected in their daddy’s hands.

Faine – 6 days – Newborn Photography

Newborn PhotographerNewborn Photographer

Are you in the process of looking for a newborn photographer?  It’s not an easy job!  There are a lot of photographers out there these days.  Barefoot Photography offers a pre-consultation if you are interested.  A chance to meet your photographer, check out the studio and see all the props, wraps, hats and numerous other items ready to make a perfect session for you and your growing family.

Faine and his family came to see me at the studio when he was just 6 days old.  He was a wonderful little model.  He slept wonderfully and still gave us some open eyes photos too!  I love this last picture of him just chillin’ out.

One of the most important portraits for each family is the FAMILY photo!  Most of the time when people come to the studio with older kids, it’s a good idea to have someone on hand who can take the older siblings home if needed.  Sometimes it takes a long time for brand new babies to get settled into a deep sleep and it can get pretty boring sometimes when your only 2 years old.  So we focus on family and sibling images first, and save the portraits of the baby by themselves for later.

Big brother Blel did such a fabulous job!  He did just what we asked and held baby Faine like a pro.  And I love to get individual shots with mom and dad snuggling the precious little bundle!  I think this is especially important for second and third babies.  They grow up with their older sibling in all their photos…let’s capture some of the alone with mom and dad!

Oh my goodness, I just love this black and white shot of Blel looking at Faine.  So precious!

Sometimes, when you have to make room for a new baby brother or sister, it’s important to be the focus of the camera all by yourself.  I just love Blel’s smile in this one!
