Flashback Friday – Maternity and Newborn

A gorgeous Flashback Friday for you all!  This family is an absolute delight to photograph.  Not only are the beautiful…they are so much fun!  We did their first daughter’s maternity and newborn session and I was delighted when they returned for their second daughter’s session.  And could big sister BE any cuter?   I love the simplicity of the clothes they chose for their session.  One of the most common questions I get is, “What should we wear?”  The answer is almost always the same…”SIMPLE is better!”  Simple clothes are great because they are just following a trend that is hot now and 8 years from now my clients will regret.  These are portraits that will stand the test of time.  When these darling girls grow up, they won’t look back and say, what were mom and dad thinking!?  That is one of the goals of my photography…to create maternity and newborn portraits that will last for generations!Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn Maternity and Newborn

Maternity and Newborn Portraits

Beautiful baby sister arrived!  And I just love this portrait of her with her adoring big sister.  So precious!  She’s already smitten…that is clear!  I am thrilled when families come all together for the newborn portrait session.  Capturing these moments when they are so little is priceless!  I know…mine are growing so fast!

Ryler – 10 days – Family Portrait

One of the most important photos I capture while photographing a newborn is the family portrait.  Mom and dad with their brand new little bundle of joy.  Ryler and his parents, Tyler and Rachel, made my job very easy!  This is just one of many family portraits that we captured during Ryler’s session.  I know a lot of parents think maybe they’ll pass on the family portrait, the session is all about the baby.  But I always encourage my clients to get in front of the camera for a few photographs.  It’s not a moment that you can capture even just a few months down the road.  They are this little for only so long.  A common question I get is what to wear for that all important family photo.  Simple is best!  Stick with solid, neutral colors to capture a portrait that will last a lifetime.

Newborn Props

Another question I often get during a newborn portrait session is, where do you get all of your props.  For those of you who have been to my studio, you know, I have a lot of props for babies.  Most of my props have come from years of searching.  Lots of time spent wandering the aisles of antique shops asking one question…”would a newborn fit in that?”  I also have a lot of clothing for babies…about half of these have come from my own hands (they like to stay busy).  I also purchase from vendors on sites like Etsy.  This provides my clients with a plethora of options to fit their style and wishes.

I also like to give my clients a lot of options with their images.  For example…we did a wide shot capturing the fur around and the entire antique box Mr. Ryler was sweetly resting in, but then we also moved in close to capture the sweet details, like his sweet little lips and fingers.  There will often be similar images like this during a session, close and far away, straight on and from above.  More often than not, my clients end up with both!

Newborn Portraits: Riley’s newborn session

Warning: Cuteness overload.  Riley’s newborn portraits are just so precious!  There were so many adorable images I just couldn’t narrow them down.  And little miss Riley was a unique little gal because she actually really liked all of the props we used.  Typically, during a newborn photo shoot, I have parents pick their favorite props, then put them in order.  I warn them that we will most likely not get a chance to use all the props.  We will use their favorite ones first and stop when baby says enough is enough.  But precious Riley slept so peacefully, we got them all!  So sit back and enjoy the sweet bundle that is Riley!

Baby Photos

Check out my new birch bed!  I have been planning this bed for a long time now and I finally had enough birch branches to make it.  It is perfectly sized for a newborn portrait session, but thanks to its sturdiness, this is a photography prop that can follow your little one through their first year!  (I know it’s strong because I stood on it before I took it to the studio…all good!)

Barefoot Photography offers a number of different backgrounds and floor options so that your baby photos are unique and varied.  Not too mention shelves and shelves of baby sized props, drawers of hats and tiny pants, and blankets and wraps galore!  You are welcome to bring anything you would like to your newborn appointment, but you don’t have too!  There is plenty of all that we need on hand at the studio.

Oh my…sweet perfection!  I love these two portraits.  They will look fabulous displayed together.  Such sweet moments captured for Baby Riley with mom and dad.

See what I mean?!  How can you pick a favorite?  Riley was such a fabulous model…and she had the most direct gaze.

I love newborn portraits with tiny baby girls protected in their daddy’s hands.

Newborn Photography Sessions

Many of you already know that I recently moved my studio to a fabulous space perfect for my newborn photography sessions!  Barefoot Photography is now located at 2942 NE MLK in Portland…just a few blocks from Nike!  There are some great things in the works, so be sure to stay tuned!  Make sure you check back here on the blog as well as on Facebook and sign up for my newsletter!

Before I moved, I was visited by this little beauty and her family.  We did maternity portraits for momma, you can see those here.  Then a month or so later, we enjoyed creating the most precious newborn photos with their new bundle of joy and her wonderful big sister, so proud!

As a photographer specializing in newborn photography, I have had the pleasure of being a part of some really incredible memories and intimate moments with many different families. There is no two newborn photography sessions alike and it is important for you to know I take each session very carefully and slowly so we can capture these once in a lifetime memories for you and your loved ones.

Here’s another beautiful mother to be who opted to take advantage of a complimentary mini maternity session with her little ones infant portraits.  And why not!?  It’s complimentary!  A lot of clients worry that they just won’t like any of the maternity portraits (it’s never happened by the way….) and I always just remind them, you only buy the photographs you like, so no worries!

Now…let’s move on to sweet Kylie.  What a precious little bundle of baby!  She is the younger sister to two fabulous big brothers, Tyler and Nathan.  And I am honored to have had the opportunity to photograph all three of these little ones as newborns.  Yes, I am just that lucky.  Thank you John and Carrie for trusting me with these fleeting moments.

Many clients don’t know that your maternity session (mini and full) and your newborn session can include older siblings.  Of course we want to capture the entire family in photos like these!  For a newborn appointment, I recommend bringing the whole family in two cars, or having someone like grandma come along.  This way, we can photograph the whole family, then sibling shots and then we can have older siblings head home with grandma (or dad) so we can focus on just baby without any stress or extra noise.   A perfect way to capture all the images you want!

Another question I hear all the time….do I need to bring my own props and blankets?  Well…you can, but you don’t need to.  The studio is choked full of hats, wraps and props for baby.  And lots of dresses and wraps for mama too!  More information on the details page here.
